Learning English in Yorkshire & the Humber is here to help people find English classes and support near them.

The site is managed by MESH, the Migrant English Support Hub. It brings together information from providers across the region, so learners, support workers and local organisations do not have to search in lots of different places.

Our goal is simple: to make it easier for people to find the right English language support, wherever they live in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Why English language support is important

When people move to the UK, learning English can make day-to-day life easier. It can help with things like:

joining a course or training programme
looking for work
feeling more confident when speaking English
meeting people and feeling part of the local community
managing appointments, forms, travel and other everyday tasks

Many migrants come to the UK with skills, qualifications and experience. English language support can help people use those strengths and build new opportunities here.

Who runs the project?

Migrant English Support Hub (MESH) is a charity dedicated to supporting adult migrant language learners in the Yorkshire & Humber region.

We created the Learning English platform so learners, support workers and communities can find the information they need more easily. Visit the website to find out more and other projects we are working on,

Funding & partnerships

Migration Yorkshire funds Learning English in Yorkshire & the Humber on behalf of the local authorities taking part in the project.

Our work is also supported by a range of funders who help us to run specific projects. Our additional funders include the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hilden Trust & BRELMS Trust.

What is ESOL?

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages.

It is a type of English language learning for adults whose first language is not English. Classes can help people build confidence with speaking, reading, writing and listening in everyday situations.
